For the most part, it is not easy to determine the authenticity of collectible knives and swords.  It is best to take them to an appraiser or museum curator that has experience with objects from the time period in question. If you see an item for sale, and cannot have it evaluated before purchase, you may want to factor this into how much you are willing to spend on an item that may be a counterfeit.
