Topics for Projects

Here are some ideas or topic suggestions for your elementary science fair projects. Be sure to talk to your group mates, parents or teacher about them if you find them interesting!

· Do plants grow better in soil without microbes? You can obtain germ-free soil by baking some in an oven - get an adult to help you. Then you can compare how plants in microbe-free soil and plants in normal soil grow.

· Does the level of air pollution in the room affect sound's rate of travel? To do this, you need to have equipment for measuring air pollution levels and you will need to have a contained room, some ways to generate pollution, a sound generation device and a way to measure sound's rate of travel.

· Does salinity affect water's freezing temperature? You can try to test the temperature at which water with a certain amount of salt mixed in freezes. You must do several tests to see what happens to the freezing temperature as the amount of salt is increased or reduced.

· How clean is the water that comes from local taps? You will need equipment to test contamination and microbial levels of tap water.
