Computer based learning concerns the use of computers as an important part of the educational setting. Generally, the phrase refers to the use of computers for training or teaching purposes rather than the presence of computers in a classroom. Learning is a significant part of the reason for the computer as opposed to gaming or web browsing. Computer based training programs allow a student to train for a specific occupation through the use of special programs. CBT's growth was at first hampered by the high cost of hardware, software and personnel. As distance learning medical transcription and cheaper and more powerful computers and software became available CBT boomed.
