When you think of round area rugs, some people automatically go to an animal fur rawhide and actually find that concept quite appalling; however, if you do your research, you will find a wide array of shag type rugs that are not real-animal fur at all.  They are made of synthetic fibers and do not appear fur-like at all.  You can get them in a wide variety of lengths.  The longer the length, the more plush and comfortable they are.  You can now get these types of rugs in a wide variety of colors, so you do not have to have the sheepskin off-white of years past.  Keep in mind that you may have a difficult time with the upkeep of these rugs, especially in a high traffic area like a family room.  Keeping shoes away from the rugs will help keep dirt at a minimum.  Your vacuum may have a hard time with a rug containing longer fibers in them, and if that is the case, you can always take it outside and beat the dirt and dust out of it if need be.
