Many experts in container gardening would state that the most important aspect of container gardening is getting the right compost for you plant. The majority of plants will be more than happy with a general multi-purpose compost, but for any trees or shrubs which will stay in their pots for more than a year, it is best to choose a loam-based compost, like John Innes No.3. Be sure to check the label or packet to find out if they have any specific needs, such as lime haters which would require a ericaceous compost, succulents and cacti which need specialist compost, and alpines which require to very free-draining soil produced by mixing gardening grit into compost.
