Eating Disorders And The Media
As simple as eating disorders sound to most of us, its implications are widely being acknowledged and recognized. These implications are not very positive either. An eating disorder can be responsible for great damage to your body systems and may even lead to death at a later stage if left untreated at eating disorder clinics. There are several causes for this disorder and all are equally disturbing. Eating disorders and the media are a new cause which has come up. And many people do believe that media in fact, contributes greatly to the eating disorder manifestation.
It's no secret that looking at glossy magazines, ramp shows and fashion shows makes us aspire for the same body types and apparels. With superficiality levels going up worldwide, people are more under pressure than ever before to look their best. And how does one look their best? By losing weight… to emulate the “ideal” body types, as shown by the media! Irregular diets, over exercising and use of laxative and diuretics are all part of the deal. While this helps in losing weight, they also lead the way to terrifying eating disorders.
So the question remains- Is the media to blame for the highly distorted body types which make normal people start skimping on their regular healthy diets? Almost every day, we are faced with a plethora of images which depict and glamorize thin women. It would not be wrong to say at this point that media is in fact a little obsessed with the concept that thinness equals beauty.
