It took Cockrell and Barber another two months before the inaccurate information was completely removed from circulation. According to the Federal Trade Commission, gripes with credit bureaus shot up 560 percent in 1990, making credit reporting the No. 1 source of consumer complaints in the United States, eclipsing auto defects and even debt collectors. As a result, consumer groups and some lawmakers are becoming more vocal about demanding changes in the way 3 major credit bureaus conduct their business. Part of the problem, they say, is that credit bureaus have made it difficult for consumers to see and understand their credit reports.
