Another type of cat 5 cable is stranded cable.  The stranded cable is a far more flexible sort of cat 5 cable.  Its intent is primarily home networks and the like.  Besides costing less than solid cables, the main advantage of stranded cabling in a home setting is that their flexibility keeps the inner wires from being cracked and enables more movement of the wires within the home.
