In 1841, at the age of 31, Robert Schumann wrote a piece he entitled Phantasie. Though the work was considered a success, Robert’s wife, Clara, who was also a well regarded pianist and Classical composer, suggested that he expand the work and make it a complete piano concerto. After some consideration, Robert agreed and set to work further on the piece. Four years later in 1845, with the addition of the schumann intermezzo, he completed the work known as Piano Concerto in A Minor, Opus 54. The composition was first performed in January of the following year, marking the completion of but one of the pieces jointly influenced by the couple.

But the two eventually were married and had eight children. They also both composed Classical music in the Romantic period style and left behind hundreds of much loved compositions. The two also influenced the work of Brahms who studied under them both. And the two fought the effects of mental illness on both Robert and at least one of their children. Like that child, Robert’s life ended by suicide while in an asylum.

But robert schumann mental illness victim, and his struggles with mental illness are somewhat less known. He was reportedly troubled as a youngster and his troubles catalyzed with a self-inflicted wound to his hand that ended what had been a promising career as a pianist. But it did not end there. He continued to suffer off and on bouts with depression throughout his life and age 44 asked to be committed to an asylum. Two years later, he took his own life. A similar fate befell one of his children who also committed suicide while in an asylum.

Green Day was formed out of the punk rock scene in Berkeley California in the 1980s, and was composed of band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. The band released records with independent labels in its early years and established a following for its music. But in 1994 it switched to commercial label Lookout Records and released Dookie to wide acclaim. However, it would be several more album releases before the group released American Idiot in 2004, which shot them to international stardom and a place in American rock history. Green day sheet music can be purchased in music stores and online, and tabs can be downloaded for free.

Until in the past several years, when most people went to purchase new music they went out, got in the car, on a bus, on their bike, whatever, and went to a music store. Today, many music stores that just seven or eight years ago were thriving business are not out of business. And the reason is clear: music sharing programs and the advent of online music purchasing. Music sharing programs allow participants to download music that had been previously purchased and uploaded to a peer-to-peer network, which is accessible via the web. While challenged for its legality in the courts, there are many choices for music sharing program websites around today.

Many students of music, especially in the beginning of their lessons, want to know if they need to learn music theory in order to learn to play the instrument well. And the answer is: no. Or, the answer is: yes. The real answer to that question is: it depends. For some people, those who learn to play by ear, or by watching others, music theory is not required for them to learn the instrument. There are many people who can compose music and who also have no idea how to write musical notation. On the other hands, music theory can help save time when it comes to learning an instrument, and it can also help people who don’t have the same ear for music as others.

Franco was a satirical musician and some of his satire rubbed Mobutu the wrong way. He paid for his social messages with two stints in jail. Towards the end of his life, he seemed to have mellowed a bit as he sang a huge song in praise of Dictator Mobutu Sese Seko.

There are good collections of Mozart or Bach for bedtime. The music of Enya can be very soothing as well. Georgia Kelly’s harp music is also relaxing and peaceful. When your baby’s awake, there are lots of nursery rhymes or music from kids’ movies that can stimulate his senses. We’ve known kids who respond to minimalist Phillip Glass’s music; it’s simple and rhythmic and when they get older, they’ll dance with it. Spirituals and soft gospel music are also good choices to help the baby get to sleep.

In 1965, two gentlemen got together in Cleveland, Ohio to help resolve a long-standing dilemma. Prior to that time, there were not any extensive stores of the very long and diverse history of piano music. But with their founding of the International Library of Piano Music that all began to change. The collection grew large enough fast enough that by 1977, it had to be moved to New York. Eventually, the collection was entrusted to the University of Maryland, where it remains to this day. The international library of piano music is today believed to be the largest concentration of piano recordings, books, scores, programs and related material.

Music, like many art forms, has long attracted those whose spirits run more to the independent side, and this is no less true for recording artists. Some artists, those who have not developed a following large enough to get noticed by the big labels and those who simply don’t want the compromises that can come with a big label, prefer getting their music out to their fans through indie music distribution channels. Many of the world’s greatest rock artists started out signing with indie labels, and some remained with them. There are even some notable rock artists that left their big labels in favor of the indie label companies.
