Schumann and bipolar, the disease which is characterized by severe mood swings did affect our beloved Robert. Bipolar sufferers are also likely to suffer from maniac depression which is what Robert Schumann suffered from. The mood swings that characterized Robert Schumann’s life can be felt in his music. The depression was however to become his undoing as it led to mental illness. As a result of this illness, attempts were made to treat Robert Schumann at a mental asylum but all efforts failed and in July 1856 the great composer passed on. The illness that killed Robert Schumann was, regrettably, also inherited by his children.
